Most people judge how "comfortable" a shoe is by how soft it feels the moment they step into it. But as a podiatrist, cushioning and genuine support are two very different things — and confusing them is one of the most common reasons people end up with foot, knee, or even back pain despite wearing shoes that felt comfortable in the shop.
What's really going on
A thick, soft footbed feels immediately pleasant because it compresses under pressure — your foot sinks in, and that sensation reads as "comfortable." But cushioning alone does nothing to support the actual structure of your foot. It doesn't hold your arch up, it doesn't stabilise your heel, and it doesn't stop your foot rolling inward or outward with each step.
