What's really going on

Leather and synthetic materials behave very differently against skin, and that difference matters most in warm weather when feet sweat more.

Leather is a natural, breathable material — it allows moisture to pass through and regulate temperature, which helps prevent the damp environment that fungal infections and skin irritation thrive in. It also moulds gradually to the shape of your foot with wear, which can reduce friction points over time.

Synthetic materials (PU, PVC, and similar plastics) don't breathe in the same way.   • Stitched or riveted construction rather than fully moulded plastic, which tends to hold sweat
  • If synthetic is unavoidable (e.g. for water shoes), look for perforated or mesh panels to offset the lack of natural breathability
